The main hospital for the St. John Eye Hospital Group is based in East Jerusalem and has been operating for over 140 years. The Hospital is the main provider of eye care for Palestinians in East Jerusalem, and sees many of the most complex eye cases from across the region, which are referred to them from medical centres across the West Bank and Gaza. As it is the only charitable provider of eye care, the importance of the Hospital for the region cannot be overstated.

The St John Eye Hospital has a large outpatients department, specialist eye units, operating theatres and 24-hour eye emergency services.

The Hospital is internationally recognised as operating to the highest standards. St John Eye Hospital recently became the first Palestinian Hospital to be awarded the three-year Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. JCI is a US-based organisation that has established patient safety and quality service standards for health facilities worldwide.

With high rates of poverty in the region, it is essential that they continue to make these services available to all. They treat patients regardless of their ethnicity, religion or ability to pay.

The St John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Group operates a clinics in the West Bank, Gaza and Jerusalem, and in 2021 treated over 134,000 patients whilst undertaking over 5,700 major surgical procedure.

The Hospital Group have 273 staff and sponsor 8 students per year through the Sir Stephen Miller School of Nursing, who are unable to fund themselves. Many of these return to Jerusalem, after their year’s sponsorship, as fully trained Ophthalmic Nurses.

The Hospital Group also operate Outreach services include the Anabta Clinic, Hebron Hospital, Gaza Hospital and 2 mobile outreach vans, which provide treatment to a population of 2.5 million people.

  • Jerusalem is the base for the specialist training and the diabetic retinopathy screening programme.
  • In 2021, 134,500 patients were treated (13% more than in 2020).
  • In 2021, 14,500 people were treated in the Hebron Hospital including performing 700 major operations.
  • In 2021, 16,500 outpatients were treated at the Anabta Clinic including performing 27 major operations.
  • In 2021, 5,000 patients were treated by the Mobile Outreach Service, across the West Bank.
  • In 2021, 273 people were employed in total, including doctors and nurses. Eight students per year are sponsored by providing further education and scholarships to complete their post-graduate nursing course through the Sir Stephen Miller School of Nursing.
