History
Taking its name from the old spelling of the town which derives from the crossing or ‘’ford’’ of
the River Chelmer which winds it way through the County town of Essex, situated in the middle of
the Province and the only City in Essex. Another Preceptory, consecrated in 1934, by the
Rev. Felix E Crate during his early years as Provincial Prior of Essex. It still meets in the
same Masonic Temple, alongside the County Hotel, which had been dedicated only four years before
by the Provincial Grand Master of Essex, R.W.Bro. Brigadier-General R. Beale Colvin, Lord
Lieutenant of the County. In age it is the fourth oldest Preceptory of the 24 that make up the
            KT Degree in Essex.
