History

            The origination of the Preceptory came about during the closing months of 1989 following an
            announcement that the proposed formation had borne fruit. The original idea was to form a
            Preceptory with four initial aims. Firstly, to instill expertise into the Provincial Bodyguard;
            secondly to act as a Preceptory of Improvement, to give demonstrations and receive papers;
            thirdly to install some Knights of Malta who would otherwise be installed at a Provincial
            Meeting; and lastly in exceptional circumstances to install new Knights into the Order. The
            Preceptory’s coat of arms includes the Essex Seaxes together with two Crosses in a shield
            surmounted by two swords forming an ‘’arch of steel’’.

            In order to become a member a knight has to be either a current or a past member of the Prior’s
            Bodyguard. Membership of the Essex Bodyguard Preceptory is by invitation only, to present and past
            members of the Essex Provincial Priors Bodyguard.
