History
In the early 1960’s it was decided to found a new Preceptory to meet at The Masonic Hall Upminster.
It would be the eighth in the Province. Although Eustace Henry Crate, the only son of the man after
whom this is named, was one of the main driving forces behind its formation, anecdotal
evidence suggests that it was not him who suggested his father as the eponymous title of the new
unit. He was probably too modest to put forward such a suggestion. However, no doubt the other
Founders were well aware that the name of the Rev. Felix E. Crate was the ideal solution to their
dilemma, as he had been the ‘’founding father’’ of the re-birth of KT Masonry in Essex both before and
after his appointment as the Provincial Prior in 1930. Fifteen years after his death in 1948, following
the Consecration, his father’s name thus would be forever remembered in Essex. No man had done
more to deserve such an honour in having a Preceptory named after him.
