History
Named after the first Grand Master of the Knights Templar. There are a number of variations of how
his Christian name was spelt - one being Hugues, whilst his surname is often written as Payns. Born
in 1070 at Troyes, France he was a relation of Count Hugh of Champagne and a member of the Count’s
court and journeyed with him to the Holy Land on pilgrimage in 1104-07. Remaining at Jerusalem after
the Count returned to France. With eight other knights he obtained approval to found the Order from
King Baldwin II of Jerusalem and Warmund, Patriarch of Jerusalem to protect pilgrims travelling to
the Holy City after arriving in the East. Ruled over the Order for some twenty years until his death
in Palestine in 1136. The Templars commemorated him every year on 24 May and it is presumed that
was the date of his death.
