History
The oldest Preceptory in the Province of the current era. When Essex became a sovereign body
in September 1930 under the authority of Mark Masons Hall, where it had been consecrated in
January 1929, the Maplestead Preceptory had taken its name after Little Maplestead, home of the
round church in that parish which has suggestions with the Knights Hospitallers. This is one of
only four round churches in England and its shape was favoured by the Knights Templar in most of
their ecclesiastical buildings wherever they settled throughout the world. Has always met in
Colchester and was founded by the Rev. Felix E Crate who became the first Provincial Prior of Essex.
