History;
St. Chads Preceptory was consecrated exactly two years following the founding of the Province
(in 1930) by the Rev. Felix Crate as Prov. Prior at Loughton. Saint Chad was the second of four
brothers who all became priests in Anglo Saxon times. The eldest of these - Saint Cedd - was
considered the head of the family and like Chad became a Bishop. Their two names are well known
in the surrounding areas with churches and roads named after them. The Preceptory's heritage is
undoubtedly derived from both the St. Chad Lodge (founded in1905) and St Chad Chapter
(founded in 1910) that also met at the Masonic Hall, Loughton. The Lodge has surrendered its Warrant
but both the Chapter and the Preceptory now meet at Chingford. Preceptory meetings are preceeded
by a ''full English breakfast'' prior to the Saturday morning start. A prized possession of the
Preceptory is the sword of E.Kt. Philip Frederick Brown, a Past 1st Great Constable and Provincial
Marshal of London who was a joining member.
