History
Taking its name from the oldest church built in 1875 on Canvey Island during the time in the Victorian
era a village was developed. The Church after it closed has in recent times been transformed into a
heritage centre. Consecrated in 1944 the new Preceptory held its meetings at a members house on
Canvey Island until 1951, but has had a somewhat nomadic life by meeting at the Admiral Jellicoe
Public House on the Island before moving to the Masonic Hall at Woodgrange Drive, Southend and
then to its present home at Saxon Hall in Aviation Way. It is interesting to note that the Founders
of the Craft Lodge and subsequently the Royal Arch Chapter as well as the Preceptory itself who are
all named after the Church have miss-spelt the name of St. Katherine substituting the second letter
‘’a’’ with an ‘’e’’ on each occasion.
