History
Named after the Archbishop of Canterbury who was slain by four knights in Canterbury Cathedral
on 29 December 1170. The involvement of King Henry II in his murder has always been a contentious
issue because of his infamous outburst – ‘’Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest’’.
A favourite of the King for many years Thomas was his Chancellor before becoming an Archbishop in
1162 but because of an argument with the King fled to France for a number of years before returning
to Canterbury. Venerated as a Saint and Martyr by both the Catholic and Anglican Churches
St. Thomsa was made a Saint in 1173.
