History
Originally meeting at Chingford the members of the Preceptory due to falling numbers
surrendered their Warrant back to the Provincial Prior in 2017. However, twelve months later the Preceptory
was ‘’reponed’’and has successfully moved its meeting venue to Witham in the North of the
Province where it has once again become a thriving Preceptory. Originally, taking its name from
the Abbey Church of Waltham Holy Cross at Waltham Abbey (close by the M25) in the western part of
Essex on the borders of Hertfordshire and near to the metropolis it is not far from Waltham where a
disconsolate King Edward I build one of twelve crosses following the death of his wife Queen Eleanor
in 1290. Each cross marked the place her burial cortege stopped each evening as they travelled back
to London following her death near Lincoln. The most famous cross is of course the one built at
Charing Cross in the capital.
